Former Prince George-Peace River MP Jay Hill's name has emerged on the provincial lobbying scene.
His name pops up three times in a search of the provincial government's lobbyist registry, www.lobbyistsregistrar.bc.ca, and Hill confirmed Monday he's been working in that regard at the provincial level. Hill, who has said in previous interviews that he has been working as a consultant for firms on government-related issues, stressed that about 95 per cent of his work involves working in an advisory capacity but, from time to time, he must sit in on a meeting, which is classified as lobbying.
Because he was an MP, Hill cannot work as a lobbyist at the federal level for five years from the date he retired from the House of Commons on Oct. 25, 2010, although he can still advise clients on how to make their cases known to the government in Ottawa.
Entries on the website for Hill begin in June when it states he was lobbying various public office holders on behalf of his client, Westcoast Energy Inc., doing business as Spectra
Energy Transmission.
Hill's work in that regard is related to an effort to develop a regulatory and legislative framework for carbon capture and storage projects in B.C. and the implementation of a regulatory, legislative and fiscal environment for natural gas infrastructure projects.
In September, he arranged meetings on behalf of MTS Allstream Inc., a telecommunications company," to introduce MTS to government, build a profile and relationships, and discuss telecommunications policy," according to the website.
And in October, Hill arranged meetings on behalf of CCS Corporation, a Calgary-based waste management company, with Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake and Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom to discuss an industrial landfill proposed for just south of Fort Nelson.
Lake is the provincial environment minister and Lekstrom is the transportation minister.
