A woman was killed and two males were seriously injured in a vehicle accident which closed Highway 97 Friday afternoon near McLeese Lake.
North District RCMP Traffic Services said the male driver of a northbound Ford Expedition SUV crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a southbound Ford F-350 pickup truck on the highway between Hill Road and Pickard Road north at about 1 p.m. Friday.
The female passenger of the F-350 was pronounced dead at the scene by the time first responders arrived. The Expedition driver was airlifted to a larger hospital, while the F-350 driver was taken to hospital by ground ambulance.
The road was closed for several hours while police accident reconstructionists carried out their investigation. Drivers hoping to reach their destination on the first day of the B.C. Day long weekend were forced to find alternate routes.
RCMP spokesperson Chris Manseau said the identities of the victims will not be released, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the accident was not revealed.
