One person has died following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 97 North that occurred Saturday morning.

Prince George RCMP responded to the incident shortly after 11 a.m., about 40 kilometres south of the MacKenzie Junction, north of the community of Bear Lake.

A single lane of the highway was open to alternating traffic while emergency personnel evaluated the scene and preserved any evidence. A police service dog was brought in to ensure there was only one occupant in the vehicle.

The RCMP is withholding the name of the driver until next of kin can be notified.

The crash remains under investigation, but the wintery weather conditions are believed to have been a factor, according to police.

The day's ongoing snowfall and drop in temperature continued to contribute to slippery roads throughout the region.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, slushy sections were reported along Highway 5 between Blue River and Valemount and 45 kilometres south of Valemount to Tete Jaune Cache.

Highway 16 had slippery sections from Bednesti to Prince George and between Prince George and Crescent Spur.

The section of Highway 97 between Prince George and 10 kilometres north of Salmon Valley were also reported as slippery on Saturday afternoon.
