RCMP are warning that highway conditions today in the Prince George and entire North District area are extremely poor.

Sgt. Pat McTiernan advises those who don't have to be on the road to stay off, and those who must travel should be prepared with emergency equipment, food and water in case of long delays to be rescued or roads being closed.

Highway 97 North is closed today to traffic in the Pine Pass due to an avalanche that hit Sunday north of the Mackenzie turnoff.

He said an evaluation of the avalanche will be done today by 1 p.m., and the hope is the highway will be reopened to traffic late this afternoon or evening.

Rain is reported in the McBride area and both snow and rain are reported in the Quesnel area, making roads treacherous.

McTiernan advises those who do not have to be on the highways to stay home, and those who must travel to do so with caution, and be prepared with emergency equipment, water and food for cases of becoming stuck or delayed due to road-closing incidents.

"If someone goes off the road, it could be hours before they can get pulled out," he said.

He said a further 15 cm of snow forecast Wednesday for the Prince George area will probably add to difficult driving conditions.
