One person has died after a serious head-on collision which closed Highway 16 Friday night.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Prince George Regional Traffic Services, Vanderhoof Traffic Services and Vanderhoof detachment personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash approximately 22 kilometres east of Vanderhoof.

According to Staff Sgt. Pat McTiernan, a Hyundai Accent travelling westbound spun out of control and collided with a GMC Jimmy heading east, with the passenger door of the sedan striking the front of the SUV.

"The right front passenger [was] deceased at the scene," said McTiernan. The driver of that car was transported to hospital in Vanderhoof in critical condition. "An infant and a small child that were in the back seat have also been transported [to hospital] but appear to be okay."

The driver and three children passengers of the Jimmy were transported to the University Hospital of Northern B.C. in Prince George with "varying degrees of injuries," said McTiernan - none of them life-threatening.

The road was closed to all traffic as emergency personnel attempted to deal with the crash scene before one lane of alternating traffic was opened on a frontage road after 7 p.m. to non-commercial traffic.

McTiernan said weather was going to be a contributing factor to the cause of the crash.

"With the snow and the rain and now the dropping temperatures, the conditions are getting pretty heavy," McTiernan said.

The RCMP was asking for motorists to use common sense and not travel on the area highways unless absolutely necessary after a day of heavy snowfall followed by rain and freezing temperatures.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure also issued a travel advisory on Highway 16 between Vanderhoof and Prince George due to the heavy snowfall.
