The resurfacing of Highway 97 between Tallus Road and Bear lake is moving forward as the project has now gone to tender.
"This is an important road network for our region," says Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Pat Bell. "This work will smooth out and preserve the highway surface, bringing it up to current standards and thereby improving the ride quality and access of Highway 97 for industry, tourists and residents."
The project involves the resurfacing of approximately 20 kilometres of Highway 97 starting from 2.3 kms north of Tallus Road to Bear Lake. This segment was hot-in-place recycled (HIPR) in 2008 as the first stage for resurfacing. The second (and final stage) in 2010 is to place the overlay with widened paved shoulders.
The project is funded under the province's three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C. Since Oct. 2008, more than $4.4 billion in infrastructure projects have been announced across British Columbia, which are estimated to create more than 28,000 jobs over the life of the projects.
Now at the contract tender stage, the project is expected to start work in June, 2010, and complete by August.
