Avalanche control work is taking place today (Dec. 21) near the Pine Pass along Highway 97 north of Prince George. (via Province of B.C.)

If you're planning to travel between Prince George and Chetwynd today (Dec. 21), you'll need to be aware of some temporary closures on the docket.

According to Drive BC and Argo Roads, avalanche control work is set for Highway 97 during the mid-day hours in order to help prevent future occurrences for local communities and backcountry explorers.

CN will be at the helm of the project, which is being planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Power King and Old Hasler roads, roughly a kilometre north of the Pine Pass.

When avalanche control activity is taking place, roads are expected to be closed for 30 to 45 minutes at a time.

Commuters are being asked to obey all traffic control personnel, to adjust driving habits and to slow down when allowed to pass.

As Environment Canada has not issued a snowfall warning of any sort for today, this makes conditions ideal for workers.

The forecast is calling for 15 km/h winds in the region today among mainly cloudy skies.

The evening is expected to clear up as the temperature drops to -11 C overnight.
