Provincial officials are hopeful to have an avalanche that closed Highway 97 north of Prince George on Sunday cleared by this afternoon.

The slide took place in the Pine Pass about 70 kilometres north of the Mackenzie highway junction.

Once crews made the area safe, equipment was to be brought in to clear the avalanche, provincial Ministry of Transportation officials said this morning.

The officials said the avalanche was likely the result of heavy snow and a wind-loading event, where the wind packed snow into an area that triggered the slide.

The avalanche is considered unusual because the temperature was -25 C. Normally, the avalanche threat increases as temperatures approach 0 C.

There are numerous travel advisors in northern B.C., due to blowing snow in the northeast and freezing rain in the northwest.

The public is asked to check www.drivebc.ca before travelling.
