Highway 16 East was fully reopened Monday afternoon after a mudslide struck seven kilometres west of of the junction with Highway 5 on the weekend.
Heavy rain through Friday evening combined with high levels of snowpack triggered a slide down Leona Creek at about 2 a.m. Saturday.
The heavy rain appeared to have caused a small rock fall, slide and avalanche in the upper catchment area, blocking the flow. After more rain buildup, the blockage released and brought down mud and debris across the highway.
Once a geotechnical engineer was able to fly into the drainage catchment and deem the area safe to work in the maintenance contractor worked to open the highway to single lane traffic Saturday afternoon.
And as of Monday afternoon, the highway was fully clear.
