A vigorous cold front will bring strong gusty winds up to 90 km/h this evening, Environment Canada said in a warning issued shortly after 4 p.m.

The city has already been struck with heavy rain, lightning and thunder and more than 1,000 BC Hydro customers were without power as of late afternoon.

The event is expected to sweep through the Central Interior, B.C. Peace and Columbia regions.

"Local tree damage or power outages are possible. Moderate northwest winds are expected to persist through Wednesday morning in the wake of the front," Environment Canada said.

"The same system will produce heavy rain over the B.C. Peace region tonight with up to 30 mm possible by Wednesday morning."
