High snowpack prompts flood prediction

The provincial government's River Forecast Centre is warning of an "elevated flood risk" in answer to a high snowpack in the Upper Fraser watershed, although it will likely not be as troublesome as two years ago.

The provincial government's River Forecast Centre is warning of an "elevated flood risk" in answer to a high snowpack in the Upper Fraser watershed, although it will likely not be as troublesome as two years ago.

As of April 1, the level stood at 136 per cent of normal, above the 120 per cent threshold the RFC considers to be elevated, but that's still below the level of 152 per cent seen in April 2012.

That led to some flooding in the Paddlewheel Park area in June and July 2012 and prompted the city to put in some temporary diking.

This time around, the RFC is predicting the Fraser River's volume will be 115 per cent of normal at Shelley but hydrologist Tobi Gardner said that remains dependent on warmth and rain.

"If it gets hot really fast or if there is a fair bit of rain, then those are the things that are going to determine how big a flood event will be," he said.
