A new barrier along the Hart highway could be in place before the winter.
City council will make a formal request to the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for separation in the middle of Highway 97 between the John Hart Bridge and Hoferkamp Road.
That stretch of highway features a significant grade that poses a danger to the motoring public, said Mayor Lyn Hall in a report to council.
"The installation of a solid centre barrier would help prevent vehicle crossovers into oncoming traffic and provide a safer traffic network through the community," the report said.
The issue has already been raised with the ministry and all that was left was to make a formal request from the city, said Coun. Garth Frizzell.
"We were able to bring that forward to the ministry and we're going to see action hopefully before the frost flies," said Frizzell.
"It's good to see the partnerships that have been building with our provincial counterparts, over this last year in particular, and it looks like we can get something done in a timely fashion."
