Ribbons were cut to celebrate the official opening of the new Hub City Volkswagen building in Prince George on Saturday morning.

The new building has been in the works for the last three years, said owner Karl Schleich, who was also celebrating his 65th birthday.

"It's been pretty hectic around here because the construction restricted our parking. We had to keep moving it around," he said.

"Exciting times, and our customers were extremely patient with us, we're thankful for that," Schleich added.

Mayor Dan Rogers was one among many at the ribbon cutting in the morning, and the dealership had a barbecue and cake to celebrate.

Schleich said he's relieved to have the majority of the construction finished with, as there were several obstacles during the process.

"It's great to be in the new building - it's much better than the old one," he said.

The rest of the old building has been taken down, except for on part of it, which Schleich said they've kept in case of future expansion.

It wasn't the original plan that the opening fell on his birthday, but he said it worked out well.

"We had it set for earlier, but then my son couldn't make it. We played around with the dates a bit, and this one just seemed to work best.

"It's a great way to spend my birthday," said Schleich, who has been with Hub City Volkswagen for more than 40 years, and a shareholder since 1984.
