The B.C. Seniors Advocate is interested in knowing how 30,000 users of HandyDart are liking the service provided to them.

HandyDart is a door-to-door service for people with physical or cognitive disabilities who are not able to use public transit without help.

The service is offered by TransLink, BC Transit, and their service providers. Last year, 2.37 million rides were provided, 51 per cent in the Lower Mainland and 73 per cent of those using the service were 65 and older.

"Transportation is identified as a key issue for seniors," said Isobel Mackenzie, seniors advocate, noting that at age 65, 76 per cent of seniors have an active driver's license, and that drops to 34 per cent for those over 85.

"Clearly we need to ensure a robust transportation system is in place for seniors, most of who are still active, but may no longer be able to drive.

HandyDART is part of that system and we need to ask the people who are using the service how well it is meeting their overall transportation needs."

The survey asks opinions about the application process, availability of rides, cost and overall satisfaction.

To keep the integrity of the survey every other user of HandyDart on Vancouver Island, in the Lower Mainland and the Okanagan will be surveyed, while the remaining three regions of the province will see all clients surveyed.

Clients can either fill out a hard copy or go online to complete the survey by Monday, Nov. 7.
