Donations of money continue to flow into the Canadian Red Cross for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
Becky Row, regional operations manager for northern B.C. and the Yukon, said Thursday that donated funds from northerners total $112,021.09, "but that does not account for donations from northern B.C. and the Yukon that have been made online or by telephone."
The local Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Temple has made a donation of $10,000 to support the relief efforts.
When one considers the small number of people who attend the Temple, this is an "overwhelming" donation, said Row. "The generosity of the people is amazing."
Gingerbread Toys in Prince George is raising funds to be given to UNICEF to support the estimated one million Haitian children who are now orphaned or accompanied.
Owner Nancy Condon said the store is offering small toys in return for donations for the children in Haiti.
"Customers who donate will receive a free LEGO, Zoob or Thomas item of their choice while quantities last."
Row said across Canada the Red Cross has collected a whopping $81.2 million of which $58.3 came from individual Canadians and will be matched by the federal government which has committed to match individual donations until Feb. 12.
The other $22.9 million came from corporations and provincial and territorial governments.
The funds will be used to provide Haitians with relief supplies of food, clean water, medical aid and shelter made necessary by a Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the county, leaving thousands dead in its wake.
