It's back to the drawing board for engineers dealing with sloughing along a section of Willowcale Road
The recently-installed bridge crossing Haggith Creek will be closed for an indefinite period to deal with more sloughing, the city said Thursday.
The crossing will be closed starting Friday at 5 p.m., meaning commuters with jobs in the area will once again have to take a different route to work.
The trouble has emerged on the south side of the bridge. City engineer Adam Homes said a culvert with about five metres of fill will be installed to stabilize the slide for the time being.
That work should take one to two week, he said. When the bridge will be reopened after that, "depends on our structural analysis," Homes said, but the city indicated it could be "many months."
"Right now, the bridge will be closed and it will be closed indefinitely until we get that structural analysis," Homes said. "And then we're going to have to eventually repair the bridge and put in a permanent stabilization in the slope."
The development comes after the crossing was closed for six months over the winter to allow installation of a bridge in answer to sloughing after culvert beneath the road had deteriorated to the point where it caused erosion.
"The city appreciates the inconvenience this causes for those who live and work in the area," city hall said in a statement. "In the months ahead, the city will conduct a thorough review of the bridge’s design and construction."
