Police have an 18-year-old man in custody who could be facing charges of armed robbery after a Prince George resident was robbed of his bicycle at gunpoint Saturday morning.

RCMP responded to a 911 call at 9:55 a.m. Saturday to report the incident in the 1900 block of Strathcona Avenue and later spotted a suspect near Prince George secondary school who met the description of the culprit.

The man dropped the mountain bike and tried to escape on foot when he noticed police giving chase and was arrested, 15 minutes after the robbery was reported.

RCMP then tried to locate the weapon, a sawed-off .22-calibre rifle, and called in a police dog handler. After a brief search, the dog, who answers to the name Astro, found the rifle and alerted the officers.

The suspect is due to appear in court on Monday and could also be charged with pointing a firearm and use of a prohibited weapon.
