Mayoralty candidate Shari Green is calling for a hiring freeze at City Hall until a review of the city's core services is complete.
During the launch of her platform in October, Green announced her plan for a so-called "core service review."
On Monday, she announced more details, including a hiring freeze at city hall - there are currently no job postings on the city's website - and departmental budget reviews that would ask "Why are we doing this, how much are we spending, and what are the results?"
"There will be no sacred cows," she said.
"This is something the community has been asking for a long time," Green said. "We continue to increase our budget year over year. I think it's time we stop and have a total review of city spending."
In October, Green committed to looking for up to 10 per cent reductions in city spending, but said layoffs were not on her agenda.
"Every single person who works at City Hall needs to be part of the discussion. If there is a change in the [mayor's] chair, this is coming," she said.
Green said she is unsure if a "core services review" could be completed by the time budget discussions begin in February.
Mayor Dan Rogers could not be reached for comment as of press time. However, in his platform Rogers committed to establish a roundtable with representatives from local business to discuss long-term financial strategies and encourage investment.
In addition, Rogers committed to establishing three-year targets for property taxes linked to inflation, and reviewing fee structures and utility rates.
Mayoralty candidates Eugene Fetterly, Bruce Fader, Alex Huber and Brandon Lewis have not announced specific policies regarding city budget management.
