Government seeking ALR input

There's still time to make your views known on the direction the provincial government should take with the Agricultural Land Reserve.

There's still time to make your views known on the direction the provincial government should take with the Agricultural Land Reserve.

A public consultation has just passed the halfway point and so far has drawn more than 7,510 visits to the engagement website, and stakeholder meetings held in nine communities throughout British Columbia.

"So far we've had 989 surveys completed, and we hope to see that number increase over the next half of the engagement period," Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham said.

A committee appointed in January has produced a consultation paper, which is available on the public engagement website

(engage.gov.bc.ca/agriculturallandreserve/) to guide the engagement process, as well as the stakeholder meetings.

The deadline for submissions is April 30.

The committee will use the input it receives to develop recommendations for the provincial government's consideration. The recommendations may include changes to the current legislative, regulatory, and administrative framework to revitalize the Agricultural Land Reserve and the Agricultural Land Commission.

Any legislative changes that support the revitalization of the commission and the reserve are targeted for late 2018 or early 2019.
