Prince George RCMP have released a video showing how quickly a poorly-secured bike can be stolen.
It shows a thief using a small set of bolt cutters to cut the cable lock off a bike left outside the courthouse in mid-March. It took the culprit about 20 seconds make the theft.
"Spring has arrived and bicycle enthusiasts are popping up more and more in our community," RCMP said. "Unfortunately, the more bikes on the road, the more opportunity for bike thieves."
RCMP urge bike owners to buy locks tough enough to thwart bolt cutters and to record their bikes' serial numbers.
It also helps to register them through 529 Garage, a third party bike registration and recovery app available online at project529.com/garage/.
It's free, takes about five minutes and includes essential information including the ownership details, serial number and photos of the bicycle.
In the event of a theft, the information can be distributed to other registered riders through an alert feature on the smart phone app. The information can also be easily provided to both the police and insurance companies.
