Go for Green Week celebrates recycling with special events including Kids Recycle Crafting workshops from Sunday, July 10 to Saturday, July 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the REAPS Compost Garden at 1950 Gorse St.

Each day, there's an opportunity to do two different crafts including T-shirt tote bags, magazine bead bracelets, CD fish, milk jug bird feeders, toilet paper roll frogs, birds and dragons, egg carton caterpillars and tin can windsocks.

"It's important to recycle to help reduce the amount of products that are going to the landfill," said Christine Reid, environmental educator for REAPS. "With our crafts one of our ideas is to help kids start to imagine and see how you can reuse many items in different ways just to get those creative ideas flowing. They can then see things that they have finished using as something else that they can keep."

One of the favourite crafts is the T-shirt tote.

"To turn the T-shirt into the bag it's really simple," said Reid. "You just cut off the sides, and elongate the neckline a bit and then with the bottom you cut it into strips and tie it off so there's no sewing involved and that means all ages can do this project."

Then children can get creative and decorate their new-to-you bag with markers.

The public is welcome to attend at the compost garden and have a look at the plants and the vermicomposting which is composting with worms.

"People can come and pick our brains about anything like recycling and composting and vermicomposting," said Reid.

Adults can attend the backyard composting workshops every Sunday and Wednesday at 2 p.m. and vermicomposting at 3:15 p.m.

All events are offered at no charge and everyone is welcome to attend.

If larger daycares or summer camps are coming to the Kids Recycle Crafts REAPS is asking organizers to call ahead so staff can prepare. For more information call 250-561-7327.
