The culminating event for the RCMP Girls' Run for Fun will be held this Saturday when participants in the seven-week program hold a five-kilometre road race in and around Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.
About 40 girls, ages 10 to 15, registered for the program this year, its fifth season.
Meeting twice each week, they not only trained for the run but, with the help of speakers at the start of each session, learned about making smart decisions regarding such matters as drug and alcohol awareness, social media safety, nutrition and developing self-esteem.
The program was put on by the Prince George RCMP's community policing and victim services units.
"Through sponsorship from the Ministry of Children and Family Development and support from dedicated volunteers, we were able to offer this valuable, esteem-building program at no cost, for girls in our community," said Prince George RCMP community policing coordinator Linda Parker.
The public is welcome to come out to cheer and encourage the girls.
The race begins on the perimeter road of the park, just off of 17th Avenue, continues over the Hudson's Bay Wetland Nature Park bridge, past Paddlewheel Park, back to Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park, along Ingledew Street to Patricia Boulevard, onto Taylor Drive, and then finishes on the perimeter road of Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.
