A free running program for females aged eight to 15 is in the starting blocks, with weekly sign posts to pass on the way towards a five kilometre race July 23.

Each week's light training sessions will include some walking, some running and some personal development themes.

"The program -- Run for Fun -- is a unique running program designed to boost girls' self-esteem and sense of accomplishment through a healthy activity," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass. "In addition, organizers will discuss topics such as nutrition, inner beauty, personal safety, self-esteem and living a healthy life."

The program is a presentation of the Prince George RCMP detachment, their Victim Services unit, and the city's Community Policing Centre.

Run for Fun is lacing up for these goals...

Gain knowledge about how to make healthy choices;

Open forums to discuss real issues that matter to you;

Learn about the realities of bullying, internet safety and gangs;

Meet other girls and make friends;

Boost your self-esteem and community awareness;

Challenge yourself;

Improve your body image;

Complete a five km run.

On race day, July 23, sign in at 10 a.m. The race will happen at 11 a.m. followed by a picnic, awards presentation and program celebration.

The full program happens at the Fort George Park band shell each Tuesday and Thursday from May 17 to July 21, from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
