Garneau consistent with men, women

Jason Garneau is one of Prince George's busiest hockey coaches.

When he's not behind the bench of the B.C. Major Midget Female Hockey League Prince George triple-A Cougars, Garneau is busy in his second season as an assistant coach for the BCHL Spruce Kings.

Garneau said he tries to coach the 15- to-17-year-old girls with the same philosophy as he uses with the 16- to 20-year-old males who play for the Spruce Kings.

"I don't change my style at all," said Garneau. "I don't think it's fair to the girls for me to change my style. It's female hockey, but in my opinion, it's still hockey. There's no difference. I coach hard in both levels. That's just the way it is."

He said the biggest difference in the girls is in the way they listen and understand the technical aspects of the game.

"They have really good technical minds for some reason," said Garneau. "They pick it up really quickly. They really grasp the concepts of team tactics - the forecheck systems, the penalty kill and the power play."

It's his third season behind the triple-A female Cougars bench and the sixth season he's coached the girls.
