The 2015 Canada Winter Games Host Society may soon have a regional partner.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors is seeking a report from district staff on how the district can support the games, following a motion at the Thursday board meeting.
Prince George is set the host the national, multi-sport games from Feb. 13 to March 1, 2015. The games are projected to draw 2,100 young athletes competing in 23 sports.
While the majority of the games' venues are within Prince George city limits, host society CEO Stuart Ballantyne said, the alpine skiing and snowboarding events are slated for Purden Ski Village and Tabor Mountain Ski Resort in the regional district.
"We're looking for funding from all levels of government," Ballantyne said. "We have tremendous support from the North."
In addition to financial support, the host society is seeking support, expertise and services from the regional district, he said.
Funding has been advanced to the games from the provincial and federal governments towards the capital and operating costs for the games, Ballantyne said.
"Funding has been advanced to the point that we're ahead of the summer games that are happening next year," he added.
The host society anticipates completing its detailed business case in June, he said. The games logo and branding are expected to be unveiled in April.
No timeline on the regional district report was available as of press time.
