A fitness challenge with a great view as a reward for the effort will be a highlight featured during the Climb for Cancer at the Northern Lights Estate Winery next Saturday afternoon.

This is the second annual event that raised more than $30,000 last year for the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George and organizers are hoping to meet or beat that this year.

The lodge provides a home away from home for those having to travel to Prince George for their cancer treatment.

"We're tremendously excited about going into the second year of the Climb for Cancer," said Doug Bell, owner operator of the winery and chair for Climb for Cancer. "We had over 200 people climb the cutbanks last year during the event and we had over 300 people registered. We're hoping to get similar numbers this year and even exceed those."

There's many activities going on throughout the event at the winery that takes place from noon to 4 p.m., he added.

"There will be local musicians that will be playing, we've got different food vendors and we'll have the fire fighters out for a barbecue, we've got Wendy's serving chili and we've got tents in case of rain," Bell said.

"Last year even though it did rain a little bit it actually was perfect weather for climbing the cutbanks so rain or shine it's going to be a great event."

Although it is encouraged for participants to climb the cutbanks, people are not obligate to do it, Bell assured.

"We're encouraging everyone to come out even if they don't want to climb the cutbanks," Bell said.

"They can enjoy the music , make a donation, and enjoy the day and cheer on other people. If they do want to climb the cutbanks it's a great way to get a little bit of fitness and see a beautiful view of Prince George."

Typically it takes people an average of between seven and 15 minutes to make the climb.

"And you do it at your own pace," Bell said.

There are switchbacks that offer a bit easier route or people can take on the challenge of climbing straight up. Some people take it on as a fitness challenge.

"Last year there were some people who climbed upwards of 13 times," Bell laughed. "And then other people just want to do it once and that's OK, too."
