BC Bus North will remain on the road for at least another 14 months.

The federal and provincial governments will each contribute about $1 million towards maintaining the service until at least the end of March 2021, according to a statement issued Tuesday.

Officials also said fares for the service will be aligned with the distance traveled. That will translate into higher fares for some routes though new routes have been created with lower

fares. Details will be posted on the BC Bus North website, bcbus.ca, on Friday.

Diversified Transportation will continue to provide the service until the contract expires in March 2021.

BC Bus North offers four routes, between Prince George and Prince Rupert, Valemount and Prince George, Prince George and Fort St. John, and Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson.

It has provided rides for almost 9,000 people since the service was launched in 2018.
