Let’s face it, we’re glad it’s 2021… I know I am.
I can say that I’ve made a New Year’s resolution, just like most of you, and I intend to keep it.
But unlike ones that are made and eventually broken one or two weeks into the year, one or two months if you’re a more disciplined person than others, mine is as simple as it gets and it’s one I know won’t be forgotten these next 365 days.
Breathing.
Now I know what you’re likely thinking… “Really? That’s your big challenge for 2021? I’m literally breathing right now as I read this. Do I need to go on?”
Here’s the thing, I’m not talking about breathing simply because it’s necessary to stay alive, although we must acknowledge it’s difficulties when contracting COVID-19 as explained by many patients in B.C. that have gone public with their experience.
I’m talking about taking a couple of moments each day to close your eyes, shut the world out, breathe in deeply through the nostrils and exhale out of the mouth.
I can’t tell you how many stressful days 2020 brought to myself, my family, my co-workers and everyone else I’ve encountered with or have spoken to.
Looking back, I’ve realized that I almost never took the time to relax and let it be (thanks John, Paul, George and Ringo) and this is something I hope to take advantage of in 2021.
Breathing gives us a moment to centre our minds, replenish our bodies and refresh the soul, as hard as it may be to do on bad days.
In times of hardship, the one thing we can count on, and be grateful for is our ability to breathe in new moments and go from being completely all over the place to restarting ourselves on a positive journey.
I believe there are good things in store for this next year and we still need to do our part to make that happen, otherwise we could be in for more miserable months mentally, emotionally, physically, and even spiritually.
Prince George’s collaborative spirit has evidently shown over the holidays and in times of hardship… let’s keep that going in the safest way that we can.
A single breath of fresh air can spark a fire in our hearts to feel better, to think clearly and to do good for our family, friends, colleagues and neighbourhoods.
And for their sake, as well as the world’s, we need more positivity in these unprecedented times.
So, I hope you and I can take on and successfully endure the New Year’s resolution of breathing intently.
It might just be a saving grace as the COVID-19 pandemic continues in 2021.
Cheers, and stay safe.
Happy New Year!
