In recognition that Canadian teens are not getting enough exercise, the YMCA of Northern B.C. is offering free summer memberships.

Teens between the ages of 13 and 18 can take advantage of the Y's facilities at 2020 Massey Dr., by applying for a free membership, which will be valid until Aug. 31.

The free promotion is in response to the 2016 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth which found only nine per cent of kids under the age of 18 get the recommended 60 minutes of play time each day. The report links the inactivity to poor sleep habits or too little sleep and determined that 43 per cent of 16- and 17-year-olds are not getting enough sleep on weekdays.

"The YMCA believes strongly in the importance of building healthy communities," said YMCA of Northern B.C. CEO Amanda Alexander in a prepared release. "Helping teens have access over the summer months will support teens in our community to find a positive connection to exercise that could foster a life of physical activity and health."

Teens can apply for the summer passes in person by visiting the Y accompanied by a parent or guardian and by providing photo identification. Some membership restrictions will apply.
