Northern Health and the B.C. Ministry of Environment issued the dust advisory on Tuesday because of high concentrations of dust in the air.

Air quality measuring stations recorded levels of fine particulate matter (PM 10) ranging from 37 micrograms per cubic metre of air to 71 micrograms per cubic metre as of 11 a.m. on Tuesday. B.C.'s air quality standard for PM 10 is 50 micrograms per cubic metre or less.

Northern Health is advising residents to avoid strenuous activity outdoors. Parents of infants, the elderly and people with breathing or lung conditions such as asthma should take additional precautions.

If you are experiencing symptoms like continuous eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheeze, contact your health care provider.

Residents are asked to avoid activities which would put additional dust or smoke into the air such as, parking lot sweeping, outdoor camp fires, using wood stoves, etc.
