Free men's health screening

Heart health is always a concern so the Rotary Club of Prince George is offering a free cardiovascular health screening for men Saturday at the University Hospital of Northern B.C.

Each year the rotary club holds the Big Blue Ball to raise funds for men's health awareness, so profits from the event sponsors the May screening.

During the information session, men in Northern B.C. will be provided with information to prevent chronic illnesses such as prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Results from the screenings are forwarded to the individual's family physician and men without a doctor are encouraged to attend so they can be referred to a physician accepting patients in Prince George.

"Our information sessions and the assessment tool will help men to understand their individual risk for developing cardiovascular disease, and is something that they can then address with their family doctor," said Ross Birchall, organizing chair for the screening. "By knowing what the risk factors are, and realizing that many of them are in our control, we can help to reduce or delay the incidence or onset of this disease."

Men must register to attend the screening and are asked to provide their Care Card number when calling 250-617-2711.

The information session goes from 8:30 to 9 a.m. with appointments to follow from 9 a.m. to noon. An afternoon session may be necessary and will be put in place upon demand. If necessary it will begin with an information from 12:30 to 1 p.m. with appointments from 1 to 4 p.m.
