The Fraser River's level at South Fort George is on the rise as increased releases from the Skins Lake Spillway travel downstream.
As of early Monday afternoon, the level stood at 8.7 metres, up from 8.5 metres on Friday, and the trend is expected to continue through this week, the River Forecast Centre said in an advisory.
On Friday, the Centre upgraded to flood watch its status for the Nechako River at Isle Pierre and downstream to the confluence with the Fraser River.
"Local residents are reminded to stay clear of streams during the spring runoff period due to highly saturated and unstable riverbank conditions and swiftly flowing water," the Centre said.
In Vanderhoof, the Nechako's flow stood at 633 cubic metres per second as of Monday and the river's level was expected to continue to rise, depending on the temperature and amount of precipitation.
A public information session on the situation in the town of 4,500 people is set for Wednesday at the Friendship Centre, 219 Victoria St. E., 7 p.m. start.
Volunteers spent the weekend piling sandbags to keep the rising water at bay.
