A mobile home fire on Farrell Street is now in the hands of police. The initial investigation into the Sunday blaze gave firefighters clues that foul play might be involved.

"We have determined that this fire is suspicious in nature and the RCMP has become involved," said Deputy Fire Chief John Iverson. "There are some very specific things that pointed us in that direction and as soon as that was noticed the police were brought in on it."

The clues were not solidified in the minds of firefighters until the investigation - automatic in such situations - that took place following the extinguishment.

"We were advised of the suspicious nature of the fire," confirmed Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass.

"We attended, seized exhibits, we have spoken to several witnesses and we still have to speak to the resident of the home who was not there at the time. The investigation is ongoing."

The fire was reported to Prince George Fire Rescue Service at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Three halls sent 16 firefighters who found smoke and flame spewing from the trailer home. Assistant Chief Darrell Kloschinsky led the Sunday morning mission and said crews entered the building during the initial stages but had to retreat back outside because of safety concerns. It took several hours to fully extinguish.

Details of the suspicious cause were not disclosed and when asked if there was a possible gang connection to the blaze - as have other local fires - Douglass said, "It doesn't look anything like that."
