FortisBC is reminding people that periods of extreme cold can spike heating demand — as well as their next bill.
Cold snaps like the current one can hit the most affordable homes hardest, as often those can be the least energy-efficient, says FortisBC corporate communications advisor Nicole Brown.
"We get very concerned when there are cold snaps like this. We know that cold weather like this puts people at risk, even if they're living indoors — especially if they're experiencing this sort of winter for the first time, or if they're a first-time renter, or they're already on a fixed income. Those seasonal bills can be really challenging.
"We want people to know there are steps they can take ... they can take steps to draft-proof. Even if they're on a fixed income, we may be able to offer some of those services for free."
Even if you have an efficient heating system like a heat pump, it will be cycling more frequently, says Brown.
"Heating ... accounts for over half of the energy used in your home, so it will definitely have an impact."
