A well-being check by 100 Mile House RCMP led to a carjacking investigation that spanned three communities on Sunday.
At. 8:35 a.m., 100 Mile House RCMP received a request to check the wellbeing of a man who was staying at a local hotel.
Frontline officers attended, however, the man in question had already left the hotel and a description of his vehicle was provided to the police.
Then at 4:30 p.m. that same day, a Quesnel RCMP officer saw the vehicle associated with the man and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the vehicle did not stop and was last seen heading north.
Shortly after 5 p.m. the Prince George RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 97 near Camp Creek Rd, south of the city.
While officers were en route to the collision, the RCMP also received a report of a carjacking on the north side of Hixon where a person allegedly assaulted the owner of a vehicle before driving away in his car.
Officers and other emergency services attended the scene of the collision, where they determined that the vehicle involved was the car that had just been stolen, and the driver was the man from the 100 Mile House wellness check requested that morning.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was being driven erratically prior to leaving the roadway and rolling over.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since been transferred to Vancouver for medical care.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are being considered against the 31-year-old former Prince George resident.
