The casual-dining Original Joe's has earmarked the former gas station site on Domano Boulevard in the College Heights Plaza as it's new location - the ninth in B.C.

The affected portion of the property, owned by Vancouver-based Anthem Properties, formerly held a Gulf Gas Station from the late 1970s through early 1980s, at which time it was converted to a Petro Canada until shutting down in 2003.

"A Certificate of Compliance [from the Ministry of Environment] was issued in 2004, noting that the site was remediated to a commercial land-use standard," said Alexa Baughen, Anthem Properties vice-president of asset management and leasing. The site was paved over and has sat vacant ever since.

Site preparation by Datoff Bros. Construction has already begun and building construction could begin next week once permits with the city are confirmed.

While a deal has been finalized between the property owner and the Calgary-based franchise, Original Joe's did not wish to comment on the project at this time.

According to Baughen, Anthem is a big believer in Prince George and it's potential for business.

"This is illustrated in the fact we have two, thriving shopping centres in the market, both of which have been some of the most successful in our portfolio," she said. "We feel Original Joe's will be the perfect fit for this community shopping centre, giving customers and residents a place to get together, dine and relax."

The Original Joe's is tentatively slated for a May 2012 opening.
