Snowpack in the Upper Fraser drainage basin is well above normal according to numbers from the provincial government's river forecast centre.

As of Jan. 1, the snow water index for the region was 123 per cent above normal. However, it was at 98 per cent in the Nechako drainage basin, indicating a repeat of 2007, when there was high runoff during the spring freshet followed by further flooding during the winter, appears unlikely.

Measurements in from Jan. 1 2007 had the index at 174 per cent for the Nechako and 128 per cent for the Upper Fraser.

By Jan. 1 about half of the B.C. snowpack has accumulated and conditions do no indicate significant potential for flood risk, RFC officials said in a statement.
