The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) has upped its evacuation alert to an order for several homes southwest of the city.

Water levels continue to rise in the nearby Chilako River.

Forty homes along Upper Mud River Road in Prince George are being asked to leave immediately and to find housing, with legal ID shown, at either the Sandman Signature or the Bon Voyage Inn.

The RDFFG says pets may be accommodated, at an additional expense and to contact the hotels in advance to make arrangements.

Residents in the evacuation order area are reminded of the following points:

  • If you need transportation assistance from the area please advise the RDFFG at 250-960-4400 or Emergency Management BC at 1-800-663-3456
  • Gather your family
    • You can also help a neighbour or someone who needs help
  • Take your 72-hour Emergency Kit and any critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available

ORIGINAL STORY:

Nearly 40 homes are being put on alert for local flooding, according to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG).

An evacuation alert has been issued for properties along Upper Mud River Road, located southwest of Prince George, due to high water rising in the Chilako River thanks to warmer temperatures and rapid snowmelt.

The affected homes are between the 15700 and 24300 blocks of the road.

One property in the same area, however, has been issued an evacuation order.

Residents are being asked to prepare themselves in the event of an evacuation upgrade and are encouraged to take all precautions in preventing damage to their home.

This includes:

  • Move equipment and farm implements to higher ground
  • Make arrangements for pets and livestock to be moved to safe locations
  • Gather important papers in water-tight containers and move valuables to alternate locations
  • Prepare a 72-hour personal survival kit for you and your family

The RDFFG has also activated its Emergency Operations Centre and the public being advised to stay away from rivers and streams in this time as they can become unpredictable.

More information is available on the RDFFG’s website.
