Flood watch maintained for Nechako River

High rainfall could put region at risk, says River Forecast Centre
flood watch - July 19, 2020

The Nechako River remains under a flood watch, the River Forecast Centre says in an update posted Tuesday morning.

The designation is put in place whenever a river level is rising and could break its banks.

Measurements at hydrometric stations along the river reached their highest levels of the season this week and flows are expected to stabilize and begin receding through the rest of summer, the RFC says.

But river's level is still very high for this time of year and the region remains at risk if an unseasonably heavy-to-extreme rainfall event occurs in the following few weeks.

"The public is advised to stay clear of the fast‐flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high‐streamflow period. Be prepared and know your hazards," the RFC says.
