Five people were sent to hospital after two vehicles collided on Highway 97 near Williams Lake, just south of the Sugarcane Reserve.

The motor vehicle incident happened Saturday just after 9 a.m., involving a red Honda Civic occupied by a male and female, and a Ford Explorer Sport-Trac occupied by two males and a female.

"The Civic was travelling northbound on the highway when it struck the southbound Explorer which had lost traction due to black ice and crossed the centre line entering the northbound lane," said Cpl. Mike Hacker of the Williams Lake RCMP. "The Civic struck the Explorer in a side impact, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway and enter the northbound ditch."

All involved were taken to hospital.

"The injuries ranged in severity from a broken neck, abdominal injuries to soft-tissue injuries," said Hacker. No more was reported on the expectations for the victims' recovery.

The police investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the scene, but has yet to speak with investigators, is asked to call Williams Lake Mounties at 250-392-3997.
