Conservation officers were out in force across the Omineca region over the long weekend, with 34 incidents to report.

Sgt. Rory Smith said the focus of the CO members was catching fishing and boating infractions, and uncover any other offenses they might encounter.

"There were 11 incidents of noncompliance, for boating-related stuff," he said. "They either didn't have the proper courses for being in control of a boat, or they didn't have the proper safety equipment on board. People need to know we are out enforcing those regulations because they apply to public safety."

Other on-the-water tickets were written for failing to produce angling licenses.

The COs engaged in patrols by boat, but also a highway roadcheck between Vanderhoof and Fort St. James.

"That was targeting fisheries-related infractions: licenses, quotas, transporting contrary to regulations [mostly cutting and/or skinning fish to prevent ready identification of size and species]. We had a total of five charges laid under provincial acts and 14 compliance notices or warnings issued."

There were also some firearms infractions that Smith described as minor in nature.

Smith said that more "enforcement projects" were planned for later in the summer.
