Prince George RCMP warn drivers to be cautious on the roads this winter as the first snow fall caused more than the usual traffic incidents.

Prince George drivers are reminded to be cautious on winter roads.

We haven't seen the worst of winter weather yet and the first snowfall in Prince George seems to have caught many motorists off guard, RCMP said.

Slippery conditions and changing weather patterns during the week brought a higher-than-average number of collisions to local roadways.

“Police officers responded to 33 reported motor vehicle incidents between November 13, when the snow started, and November 16,” Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Prince George RCMP media relations officer, said. “This is approximately three times as many reported incidents as we would normally see during a similar time period, which is a significant increase.”

RCMP have a few reminders for drivers heading into winter-driving season:

- Ensure you have good condition, winter-rated tires on your vehicle.

- Increase the distance between you and the car ahead while driving.

- Clear all of your windows of snow, ice and condensation before heading out.

- Make sure your car sensors and cameras (if equipped) are clear of slush and mud.

- Speed limits are set when roadways are under ideal conditions, so slow down and drive to the current conditions.

- Give yourself extra time to get to your destination during the winter so you don’t have to rush.
