Construction of the downtown district energy system will close First Avenue at the intersection of Dominion Street starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
City utility engineering supervisor Kristy Brown said the closure, which effects traffic on Highway 16, should only last until 7 a.m. Thursday morning.
"If it's not completed by then, then we'll have to go into the day," Brown said. "If we do go past 7 a.m. we'll have a partial lane closure so they'll be traffic moving in either direction of First Avenue."
Detour signs will be posted, Brown added.
Currently the intersection of George Street and Second Avenue is closed, as is Third Avenue between George Street and Queensway.
Travelers looking to connect between Highway 16 West and Highway 16 East can use Fourth or Fifth Avenue to connect between Queensway and Victoria Street.
