Prince George Fire Rescue contained a fire to the single unit of an apartment building where it broke out on Tuesday evening.

In all, 15 firefighters were called to the scene at 1775 Sixth Ave. at 7:15 p.m.

They found smoke coming from a third floor of the four-storey building and traced it to the kitchen where the contents of a pot on a stove had caught fire.

The unit's lone occupant escaped without injury and the building was evacuated by the time firefighters arrived.

"Fire crews were able to knock down the fire quickly and contain the fire to the one apartment,"

Asst. Chief Kevin Scobie said in a press release. "There was extensive smoke and fire damage to the apartment and light smoke damage to the third floor hallway."

An estimated cost of the damage was not available.
