Both the Prince George Fire Fighters Union and Prince George RCMP are urging residents to be wary of telephone solicitors asking for donations to the union's campaign in support of muscular dystrophy.

The union "does not fundraise by telephone and will not call members of the public for a donation for any of the charities they support," RCMP said Thursday.

If you receive one of these calls, do not provide credit card information, do not wire money and otherwise do not contribute in any way to these scammers, police advise. Instead, hang up and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

Union members do fund raise for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, but only during the second week of September each year when it holds its annual Boot Drive at public locations throughout the city.

The union contacted RCMP this week to say it has received several calls from the public advising that they had each received a call they thought to be fraudulent in nature.
