Fire victims will have weekend shelter

All the victims of Wednesday's apartment fire on Central Street will have a place to stay over the Easter weekend.

All the victims of Wednesday's apartment fire on Central Street will have a place to stay over the Easter weekend.

Hotel vouchers for the 16 displaced families have been extended through Tuesday, ensuring those who don't have somewhere else to go will have a place to celebrate the holiday. Originally the vouchers would have expired this morning, leaving some of the families scrambling to find alternate accommodations at a time when local social service agencies are closed for the long weekend.

The fire gutted at least one unit at the building at the intersection of Central and 10th Ave., and smoke and water caused severe damage to adjoining suites. Cleanup efforts are underway and families are still assessing what was lost in the blaze.

Friends of some of the people who live in the building started collecting donations on Thursday and they have continued to pour in from friends and strangers alike. Organizers are hoping to resupply the families without insurance with everything from clothes and toiletries to electronics and furniture.

More information on how to help is available at the Friends of Fire Folks page on Facebook.
