A fire struck a McBride-based lumber manufacturer and major employer in the community Wednesday.

Called to BKB Cedar Manufacturing at about 5 a.m., volunteer firefighters encountered "major structural damage" to the plant while the fire had spread to a mulch pile, Fraser-Fort George Regional District spokeswoman Renee McCloskey said.

Firefighters from Valemount and the wildfire management branch were called in to help deal with the blaze at the site and to keep it from spreading the surrounding forest area.

BKB president Raj Basran could not be reached for comment. The operation reported employs 35 people in the community of 576 people 220 kilometres east of Prince George.

No injuries were reported.
