With the goal of removing ice from the entrance of a back channel on the Nechako River local Fire Rescue Services crews are working from the end of a 100-foot ladder extending from shore pumping 800 imperial gallons per minute from the river.

The back channel runs through Cottonwood Island Park and is key in accommodating the rising water levels of the Nechako close to where it meets the Fraser.

The team is working in Kiwanis Park west of the boat launch.

There is stationary ice on the Nechako that runs upstream about 12 km from the Fraser but there are open channels and water levels have been stable for the last few days.

City is providing updates to about 240 residents and businesses on River, PG Pulpmill, Preston, Pozer and Ongman Roads and is offering sandbags and sand by calling 250-561-7354 or 250-614-7828.
