Update: Tamarack Street fire wreaks $200,000 damage

Blaze marked by thick plume of dark smoke

A thick plume of smoke dominated the sky above the VLA neighbourhood early evening Wednesday when a fire erupted at a 2100-block Tamarack Street home.

Prince George Fire Rescue crews were called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and arrived to find a fully-involved garage and the fire extending into the attic of the home and a neighbouring garage.

Crews quickly extinguished the main body of the fire between the two homes but they remained on the scene for some time with a full contingent of equipment, including a ladder truck, deployed to the scene.

For a time, the fire also drew a steady stream of onlookers who made their way along adjacent streets.

No occupants found in either home and damage to the structures is estimated at $200,000.

Neighbours reportedly heard an explosion prior to the fire breaking out although its cause remains under investigation.
