Prince George firefighters held the first 48-hour Rooftop Campout at Canadian Tire from March 9 to 11.

The fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada raised more than $12,000 with proceeds going to equipment for those in need and research to find a cure.

Five firefighters went up on the roof, while one was on ground crew duty.

"We're so excited about the money raised," said organizer and firefighter Ian Provan, who provided ground crew support for the firefighters on the roof. "It's our first time doing the event and it was a lot of fun."

During the opening ceremonies several people spoke including Shirley Bond, MLA Prince George-Valemount and Minister of Justice and Attorney General, acting mayor Albert Koehler, along with Susan Andrist, former northern B.C. chapter president of Muscular Dystrophy Canada and Ian Provan, firefighter and Muscular Dystrophy Canada advisory group B.C. campaign chair.

The firefighters who took 48-hour rooftop duty included Mike Stachoski, Shane Lapierre, Jeremy Kostyshyn, Clayton Sheen and Wayne Weis.

Plans are already in the works for the second event in 2013.
